Ice-breaker
- Imagine: you are walking home at night when you hear a voice from a doorway of a closed office building that says 'I'm hungry. Please give me some food.' What would you do?
- Why do you think people become homeless?
- Once you have become homeless, why might it be difficult to return to a normal life again?
Language corner
- A roof over your head means 'a place to live', ie permanent housing rather than living on the streets.
- A steady job means 'regular work', not casual, occasional work.
- Someone to share your life with means 'a partner', eg husband, wife, or significant other.
- Beggar means 'a person who asks other people for money or food in order to live'.
- Many beggars are homeless.
Cultural corner: the homeless
- In the UK, the homeless are also known as rough sleepers or street people. Homeless women who carry all their possessions around in bags are known as bag ladies. A tramp (US: hobo) is a poor beggar who travels from place to place.
- A wider definition of the homelessness problem also includes those who are in bad, overcrowded, dirty, damp or otherwise unsuitable housing.
Grammar corner: Reported speech
Reporting verbs:
say, tell, ask, demand, confess, feel, doubt, decide, plan, remember, wish, worry, accused, reply, answer, etc.
