Cultural notes: reading
- E-shopping or online shopping is shopping using the internet, usually a credit card to pay for purchases, which are then delivered to your home address. Some people like online shopping because it is easy and fast to use. No shopping journeys need to be made. You can find a specific item you want by searching the whole world if necessary.
- The typical way of buying something online involves a number of steps that reflect normal shopping in a high-street shop: a) you look at the products on the webiste; b) when you see something you like, you add it to your imaginary shopping basket (US: shopping cart); c) when you have found all the items you want, you go to the chekout, give your password, pay and confirm your order. The shop then usually sends you an email confirmation.
- Some important areas for online shopping have been: books; CDs; computer and printer supplies; electronic equipment and travel (eg flight tickets). These are all things that can be easily sent through the post and which do not need to fit an individual perfectly! Clothes and food have been less successful in online sales, though business has been growing steadily over the years.
- Amazon (books; CDs; films; electronic goods; etc.) jas been one of the most successful online shops. Ebay is an online auction house - shops and individuals can put their products up for autction. The highest bid (offer to pay money) wins the product.
- Some shoppers are worried about the security of shopping online, eg they worry if it is dangerous to give their credit card number over the internet.
